Back in 1828, at the very first open meeting of the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge, Thomas Addison (its first President) had expressed a wish that one day Preston would have its own university. Referring to the new London University, he suggested that “what has been done in London, might upon a corresponding scale be done in Preston.” He never lived to see the realisation of his dream, but 160 years on Lancashire Polytechnic officially became The University of Central Lancashire.
